I think I'm good here! So if you want to meet me in front of it or I can come find you instead, either's fine with me! But I don't think I should hold onto these.
Because he's already gotten an item--one that's his. That's what all those deposit safety boxes seemed to be about, impossible items connected to people. Creepy, because the photo in his hand is one he didn't have on him, hasn't even seen with the frame encasing it before and never received. It's disturbing, but in the same way of how anyone is here in the first place: they shouldn't but, yet here they are.
Robby does as he said he would though, hanging outside the apartments, keeping an eye out for Tsuruno. And when he thinks he sees her, he'll raise a hand--the one holding the picture--in signal, and start to walk towards her, to meet her.
And when they're close enough to hear each other: ] Hey.
[ This is probably a much more enthusiastic response, complete with one hand waving energetically over her head while the other clutches a small stack of papers to her chest.
She comes to a much safer halt than she had the first time they'd met (no milk involved this time) and holds out the papers to him. ]
Here you go, safely delivered! [ She still has no idea how she wound up with them, but at least all is well that ends well? ]
[ It's certainly a more enthusiastic display for what the day's been, but Robby frees up his hand, shoving the frame into his jacket pocket and making it clunky-looking as a result, as he takes the offered papers. ]
Th...anks. [ Just, a little awkward here and all--how often do you have someone hand you over your apparent juvie papers? But Robby unfolds them and looks, and sure enough; he's not really spent much time going over them, but they're crinkled in a way he remembers, the lettering and everything. His name right there, the name of the detention centre... ]
I don't know why.... this was half a year ago. More. [ He's flipping through the different papers, though there isn't much to it. But he's staring at it, his mouth agape, and without thinking: ]
...I nearly killed someone. I thought I did; he ended up in the hospital, in a coma. He could've never walked again.
[ He doesn't even look at her as he shares it. The details just spilling forward, like this is normal to share. ]
[ Well. There's no faster way to dump a bucket of ice-cold reality on a girl's enthusiasm like talking about how you almost killed someone and managed to hospitalize them at the very least.
Tsuruno blinks slowly at first, a little bewildered. That's a lot to hear and from the way he looks, it's almost like the words just came out without any kind of floodgate to hold them back. ]
Um.
[ She is full of questions. Why had he almost killed someone? What had happened? She's not particularly afraid of him now, because it's not like he tried to assault her with the milk bottle and leave her for dead, but this sounds like a painful memory to recount to someone he barely knows. ]
... It... sounds like it was a pretty rough time, whatever happened.
It was a school fight. [ Robby looks up at her now; and if she's giving any blatant cues that this is a very awkward topic, either by the way she speaks or looks (guess the answer), he doesn't seem to recognise them. He's transfixed by this topic, the weight of it not lost on him by his features; not the way he talks, his tongue finding the words. ]
It ruined my life for...months. I didn't have anyone I could talk to, it seemed like everyone blamed me for it--and I knew what I did, you know? But I hated everyone, because no matter what I did, I was always the screw up. I was a mistake.
[ She is absolutely unprepared for this kind of personal talk so Tsuruno looks a little like a deer caught in the headlights of Emotional Outpouring going at her at high speed.
A school fight that escalated to that degree? She doesn't know what this other kid said to him. She doesn't know how badly he wound up injured, if at all, and sure, that's one hell of a mistake, but the way he speaks really... ]
... Hey.
[ A little quietly, but she reaches out almost on instinct, to catch one of his hands in hers. The expression on her face is a tad more stricken. ]
[ He doesn't notice her reaching out until something touches his hand, and Robby looks down to see it there. Blinks at it, but he looks up as the confusion reaches his eyes to meet hers, and her question--he ducks his head with an initial silence that might be an answer in itself.
Until he looks again, and gives a lop-sided smile into one of his cheek, brief and small. ]
I'm doing better about it. I, uh-- I'm trying to be better. [ He pats the papers against one hand, a meaningless action. ] I went out of my way to try and get back at everyone, but I just felt awful in the end.
[ He stands for a moment, feigns a look around them before he shrugs. ]
I was trying to make up for it, but then I ended up here. Tough luck, huh?
I kinda know a thing or two about luck. [ With a little twist of her mouth as she releases his hand. ]
And usually how it works is that things that seem kind of terrible usually have a way of working out for the better. Not that I think there's a whole lot of good about ending up here, but...
You got to meet me, right? I'm pretty great! [ Wow, she's so modest. ]
And maybe you'll learn a thing or two that'll help you with trying to be better! If anyone here calls you a screw up, I'll fight 'em myself!! To me, anyone can mess up, but the people who try to learn from that are the coolest ones in the end.
[ Wow, so modest indeed. Not that Robby particularly mind--or considers--the words in any particular manner. Robby can tell a cheer up session, and he gives her a half-hearted smile, something that doesn't reach the eyes, but it doesn't need to, right?
He looks back down at the papers, rocking on one of his feet, and--it's strange. His brow creases again for the moment he seems softened by Tsuruno's valiant attempts, when, like in a half-daze: ]
...I don't know why I even told you all that. [ Those words of encouragement might have snapped something out of Robby. Wait. Uh, did he really just tell her... ] Uh... okay.
[ The chuckle he gives is awkward, which about matches the rest of Robby. He rubs at the back of his head, and decides to shove the papers into his pocket. ] Um, okay. I-- don't worry about that. Sorry. That-- that was too much.
From what I can tell, it's been making people really want to talk about what they got, even if they look like they don't actually want to. Someone actually flat-out told me "I don't want to talk to you."
[ Tsuruno doesn't appear to be all that dismayed by it. ]
Honestly, either way, he'd get it; once his brain gets out of the fog of what he just did. If this other person blabbed embarrassing, cringy, tales of assault on another person to some other person? Robby would want to ditch them too. Kind of wants to do that now, actually!!
But he's confused. Which isn't anything new, but in this moment, it's getting him to frown, and stick around. ]
But I already got something from that vault, and I didn't do any of that before. [ Hell--he'll even take it out of his pocket to hold it; not showing it, but the frame back is visible. ] I've still got it.
[ Any words coming to mind? Coming out of his mouth? He's waiting, and--nope, even a small shake of his head! ]
It's a picture of me. I mean, I haven't seen it in ages...
[ He hasn't seen it at all, but regardless, it has to be his. Robby shows it to her now, though it might take Tsuruno a second to recognise the Robby in the photo: he has a bob haircut, softer features, standing next to a wooden sign that reads 'MIYAGI-DO KARATE' under a chiselled out bonsai tree. He's smiling bright, eyes twinkling, and a man stands beside him with a hand on his shoulder. Look at this man, he is the most dad-looking man to behold. ]
[ Tsuruno hums inquisitively, peering down at it now that he's showing it to her and she can rest assured she's not accidentally shoving one foot through the drywall of His Secrets. Again.
But as she looks at the picture, her eyes widen a bit. ]
[ So that's not it. Does he need to keep holding this framed photo out? Unless Tsuruno gives him reason not to, Robby will drop his hand after a while. ]
Maybe there's just another item around in there. This place doesn't have to make sense. [ Right? ]
